Christians today are ashamed of the Adam and Eve tale though it was taken seriously by Jesus and the apostles. Some argue that the fantastic and insane stories in the Bible are metaphorical. But nobody agrees on what stories exactly are insane. You end up with no useful way to tell metaphorical from that which is non-figurative. And some dare to pick any story and butcher it with, "This line is meant to be history and this one is a figure."
The story is that God made Adam and then made Eve from his side. God commanded Adam to do what he wanted. There was one rule, to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam was told that if that should happen he would die that very day.
Eve was not even created until after that. The story goes that Adam passed this fearsome edict on to Eve. A serpent, presumably the Devil, got her to doubt this.
Read Genesis 3:
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
A lot is made of the reference to touching. But you may assume that what God said to Adam was shortened so that statement was left out by the writer of Genesis. There is no reason to think she added it in by mistake. And if she did, it is clear that Adam did a bad job of communicating with her and it was his fault.
She not saying she is commanded to refrain from the fruit. "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” Reads more like, "That is what God said and I don't know if it is meant for me or not."
The serpent told her that God only wanted to keep her and her husband like infants and that disobeying him would make them like Gods knowing good and evil. He said she should not fear God's threat of death. She talked her husband into deciding to go to the tree and partake of its fruit. And they did so with terrible repercussions when God found out.
And they did not die of course. So God was indeed a liar.
God, in the story, did not want Adam and Eve to become like deities knowing good and evil. The Lord was supposedly protecting them from the damage done when one feels one has a security and a power one does not have. Did he not have the power to fix this if they asked? Why did he not actually explain that? The story says thorns etc all appeared so he was miraculously making bad things to punish them. This is not two people wrecking themselves.
It's interesting how Satan in the Garden of Eden never thought of, "Hey Eve. There are infinite multiverses. There are countless versions of you. Thus you are effectively a God. It just happens to look as if you are not. If you want to be like God knowing good and evil, you already are like him. He didn't tell you that!"
If there are multiverses then Satan not knowing, God not knowing, is a major giveaway that the Genesis story is a pack of man-made nonsense.
Even sceptics of the multiverses theory, say it is understandable why some people would posit such a theory. Satan didn’t think of that either.
All that is consistent with a story that thinks the earth is the only planet.
That aside, there is no original sin for Adam and especially Eve did not sin at all.
