WHY WE SHOULD ASK THE BIG QUESTIONS AND HOW WE SHOULD LOOK FOR ANSWERS

It is good policy to ask the big questions. Is there a God? Is God the ground of morality? Has God spoken in a revelation? Am I a soul? Do I have free will? If so, how important is it in assigning responsibility to me? Is abortion okay? There are many others.

Each is a separate subject by the way. You get all the theories that try to answer each question and eliminate as many as you can to see what is left standing. Then you look for evidence for what is left. The reason is that you may feel that it is a nice thing to be biased. Bias rewards you with secure feelings. But it is not really nice. You are a thought prisoner. Errors lead to errors so you want to know what things are wrong in your life now.

Don't wait until you have to go to a psychiatrist over some kind of existential dread where you feel God has damned you to Hell already. It may be too late to chase the big questions then. Investigate now and you will be safe.

What makes a person a person matters. The idea of God being the authority who tells you right and wrong matters even if we reject it. People can suffer and die over these things.

The trolley problem is one good test for the big questions.

In all its forms it is about the moral/ethical difference between ending a life or letting that person die.

Here is the problem Do you direct a train at a person on purpose to kill them instead of letting the train go its course and kill five people on the track? Many in religion say that you don't kill and you don't weigh life so you let the train go on its course. God would be about that principle then if they are right. This is serious!

They ignore how doing nothing is doing something. They ignore how if you cannot get to the controls, then God is the one deciding to let things take their course. He is still doing something to kill them.

The dilemma can freeze you so God should helpfully tell you what to do. Now the problem is there is no way to test if he has really told you.

To sum up

- it is extreme to put one life before many

- it is extreme to kill one person to save many

That matters for we live in a world where terrible things are justified under the banner of, "it was an unavoidable necessary harm." The slippery slope is there. And we are all on it.

Also, we should not be even thinking of a God and what he commands or wants at that point. Lives are at stake. Oppose the notion that God and prayer are of ultimate importance.

Free will, if it is to have any importance, should mean two things.

One that the more carefully we think, the more free we are.

Two that the more effort we make to get informed, the more free we are.

This backfires for morals only seem to work within a boundary. They appear to help to an extent. But they collapse when the bigger picture is looked at. Ultimately morality is a social construct.

It is very wrong for people to not care about others having faith in God. They should care.

Search for answers for the big questions. The answers need not be complicated. Look. Do not listen to those who accuse you of throwing say Christianity away if you reach sceptical conclusions. If the faith is false, then logic and evidence throw it away. It is not you.
