All religionists say, “Good is greater than evil” but that advertises evil. It says evil does something and is real. An evil person does not care if evil turns to good as long as he can grab what he wants from it. If you are rich because you sell drugs do you care that everybody you hurt is now a saint and reformed as long as the money is in your coffers? And the evil conscience can persuade itself that good will come so the evil in the big picture means little.
On the human level, human nature wants to suit itself so it will pick the evil it likes and the good it likes. It is not directly good or evil.
Religion would agree. But it will say that if you think of God, you end up with good being identified with the will of God. That would mean that evil is about you, selfishness. I say that if you do good because you want to that is what matters. I do not care what is good or evil in the sight of God.
Clearly if there is no God who cares about morality, then people are being falsely accused of evil. And also, if you make a mistake about there being such a God you will go against him intending to be evil. Evil intent and inner pollution are the result of that error.
False accusations of evil are themselves evil. Evil corrupts and for some reason it seems to sow seeds in those who merely witness it or think they do. So thinking there is or may be an evil when there is not, corrupts. Evil in a sense is in the eye of the beholder and Jesus said if your eye is dark your heart will be too.
Unfair suspicions rather than accusations have a bad effect too.
If you think there is evil in a person that is not there you will treat them accordingly. You send them a corrosive and polluting, "You are bad", influence. You are the influence. People pick things up from you without you realising.
To say good is the default and that evil is just a distortion of it, is to say not that good is greater than evil, but that evil is really nothing.
What do people say about evil and good in the light of that?
1 It is said by many that good comes about when evil happens, in spite of evil.
2 It is said by others that good comes about when evil happens because of evil.
3 It is said by some that it is a mixture of both and it depends.
Let us just mention Augustine's doctrine that evil is a privation, an absence of a good that should be there. If evil is nothing then there is no point in saying good comes in spite of it. There is nothing there to be in spite of.
To say that good comes because of evil is just what you would expect if evil is really just confused good, or good itself. Evil would not really matter.
Either way it does not matter if you oppose evil or not.
If evil becomes good in spite of itself why act against it? It would be stupid or perhaps evil to take the trouble to be a person of principle and virtue for those things are very difficult.
If good is so troublesome that it needs evil before it can exist then why bother? It is not the beautiful strong thing it says it is. You won’t be motivated to protect something that is riddled with lies.
To say “good happens because of evil” would be a lie. It would put you outside society. It would make assassins deserving of the same honours as nurses.
You would only say that if you thought that things have to work out. People will not let you say that of your evil but they will say it of it. Where I cannot say that I should rob the bank and direct the money to hospice care, they are allowed to as good as say that. “Some good will come of it. The bad will unravel.” I see a level of hypocrisy there.
Also there is a thin line between good happening because of evil and good happening in spite of evil. If poison was curing cancer in spite of itself, you can also say the poison is curing cancer. It is just two different perspectives both valid. Two angles.
In that sense number 3 is the option you have taken. You are both saying good comes in spite of evil and because of it.
Some say we should not oppose genocidal regimes for they will always come back in some form so they are never really defeated. Their critics say that does not matter. They would agree with, “It is about the principle. They are to be shown as evil regardless. They say it might make it worse to ignore or even celebrate them.”
We conclude that luck and chance bring good about. It is not evil that does it. And people do untold harm by thinking that it does.
