Jung in Psychology and Alchemy indicated the following.
A child is terribly hurt by the carers, the parents. If the child grows up to be a mature person, they will accept that these things have been done and that is life. It is immature to be interested any more in how culpable and malicious they were and/or are. “Only a fool is interested in other people’s guilt since he cannot alter it.” In other words, he cannot go back in time to make them better people and even now only they can change their hearts. He has to leave the matter for he cannot with his own effort, his spells, his prayers or his anything, evolve them into decent individuals. He has to fix himself for he has to be hurting people too. That is what he should focus on. Anything else is a waste of energy and valuable time. Anything else only adds to the harm they have done.
Notice the reasoning here, "I refuse to care about the darkness in them for I have to, not because I want to. If I want to that is good. But that is not why I do it. If I could do something it would be fine to focus on their responsibility for what was done to me." It is grudgingly letting it go. In reality you are not letting it go but pushing your resentment down deep. You deny it is there because it is there and you sense it is.
A parallel, if you have to put the dog down you lose something inside by doing so. Having to do it does not mean it is good for your core, your "spirit." It is made no less terrible by having to do it. To reason, "It is worse to kill my neighbour in cold blood, deliberately than for fate to program my mind and make me do it", clearly shows you are more worried about seeing yourself as good than being good. The life matters less than your righteous ego.
Christianity rejects the sentimental notion that God accepts us the way we are. They say he accepts us despite us being harmful creatures and sinners. They say he only receives us for Jesus helped bridge the divide, bridge the way by doing good to atone for the bad we did. And his plan is to transform us more into Jesus. He does not accept us for we have a bad aspect to who we are. He has to treat it as if it were not there for the sake of helping us reform and learn. So his helping us does not mean he has a nice opinion of us. His help may offend because it is clearly grudging.
Should a God then be interested in our guilt? Not really. If you of your free will murder somebody that is irreversible. The teaching is that God can only make you repent and become a person who is for protecting life if you ask him. The Bible insanely talks about God taking away your sins but in reality he can only whitewash them to look to the future. God would also be another character trying to make out that those who are victimised by what you have done are the problem if they remain distrustful of you. And he is making out that the moral outrage is not there, that it is something other than what it is. He cares not about your degrading of yourself when you degraded others. God needs a psychiatrist then!
To pray to a God like that shows what is inside us. He appeals to us for some reason or reasons. We are definitely trying to feel that the harm we have done in the past in some way should be treated as if it never happened. We want a simulated reality, "It happened and in truth it did not."
Prayer in fact is about trying at a distance to get into the heart of another to reform it and clean it. It is you trying to do it with God as the instrument. Religion says that God ignores prayers by harmful people for harmful people. Prayer starts with repentance and turning to God for mercy, in this view. That does not fit the wisdom of Jung. Prayer is based on a suspicion that evil is lurking in another and trying to interfere with it. That is its foundation. It is there even if not explicit.
Jung wrote in his letters, “I am sorry to say that everything men assert about God is twaddle, for no man can know God. Knowing means seeing a thing in such a way that all can know it, and for me it means absolutely nothing if I profess a knowledge which I alone possess. Such people are found in the lunatic asylum. I therefore regard the proposition that belief is knowledge as absolutely misleading.”
[He was thinking of people who claimed to know their religion was true and implies they are mentally damaged. This would apply to Jesus more than anybody else if he claimed to know he was God. The Church says he does. The Bible has him advocate some kind of magical knowledge, "That they may know you the only true God and Jesus who you have sent. Jesus in the gospels did invite people to know God like he did…."]
I would look at that in the light of how people might be vague on what they think a God would be but "know" whatever is there has forgiven them their sins. God forgiving matters more than any other idea about him. To have a relationship with God, forgiveness needs to be possible and reconciliation. This is top of the list in the God twaddle.
If it is twaddle for people to think God created the world that is worse. It is more personal. It is more down to people thinking, "I sense God has forgiven me. Therefore I know."
Many believers claim to have doubts but act like they know there is a God and that he is clear on their course in life . Such a person might be a priest or nun or evangelist. Their actions speak loudest. They are fanatics no matter how nice they may seem to be. If you twist your mind so that you see some being who you doubt as a being you know is there then there is serious delusion going on.
And Jung wrote, “If you have inner experiences you are always in danger of identifying with them and imagining that you are specially favoured, or are a special species of man who possesses one organ more than others.”
If you think you are inspired by God or have some extra-sensory power inside you, that will happen. You feel special. Religionists may say, “I am not all about me for I am close to others in my religious circle who have a similar connection to God and Jesus to me.” Yes but each person is still an island. The islands are all having individual experiences and trying to find overlaps. Each person is still thinking, "I can only speak for me and how unique I am in my connection with God." Two individualists who have a matching goal are still individualists.
Jung was absolutely right. Prayer. Knowing God. Anything that tries to change the bad within the other. They are immature twaddle.
