WHAT IF GODS OR SPIRITS OR ANYONE CAN FEED ON THE SOUL OR SPIRITUAL ENERGY OF ANOTHER?

The idea of a deity or spirit "feeding" on human energy, essence, or soul and framing it as a "good" or beneficial act appears in both traditional occult philosophies and specific alternative religious groups.

Soul can mean something that is part of the body but the real you and thus in a sense better than the body.

Or some kind of occult way of existing and being able to rouse forces to survive death or even influence what is happening around you invisibly.

Christians tend to see it as the real you - you are seen as ultimately being a mind that has no parts or material components that is unaffected if the body dies.

As soul feeding is a mystery and the soul is seen as a mystery, any one of those interpretations can fit the concept of some parasite using you for energy or its own ends.

The soul idea clearly risks making the body less important - that is contagious.  The person who downgrades how they are their own body will start doing it to others.  To downgrade the body is harmful for we live in a material world and amounts to degrading your very self.

The idea that Satan can only possess or afflict the physical body while the soul - or the real you if you like, whatever that might mean - remains entirely untouched and pristine is a form of dualism that conflicts with human dignity. It is why a Devil might simulate a possession...if anyone thinks it is real they succumb to toxic dualism where the body is lesser.  Others might argue that the Devil is in a person to consume their energy to empower itself.  It may go when it is replete - there is no evidence that if a demon departs following an exorcism that the exorcism moved it out. Some say that the energy and emotion involved in the exorcism process itself feeds the demon.

Some faiths have a saviour whose spiritual essence is absorbed in some kind of communion rite.

While main-line religions generally view spiritual feeding as a malicious, demonic attack, certain esoteric circles reframe this relationship as a necessary, productive, or even liberating form of spiritual evolution.

Perhaps some settle for it being a grey area. Or as neutral.

The concept manifests across different occult subcultures and historical cultic setups in the following distinct ways.

1. Mystical Absorption and "The Great Work"

In high ceremonial magic and Western occultism (such as Neoplatonism, certain Gnostic sects, and Hermeticism), the ultimate goal is often the dissolution of the ego into a higher power.

Ego Death as Feeding: When a practitioner invokes a god or cosmic force, the entity is thought to "consume" the individual’s lower passions, personal identity, and dense earthly energies.

The "Good" Framing: This spiritual consumption is not viewed as predatory. Instead, it is seen as a form of divine alchemy. The entity digests the flawed human essence to purify it, allowing the practitioner to achieve spiritual rebirth or a higher state of consciousness.

2. Occult Vampirism and Left-Hand Path Systems

Within Left-Hand Path traditions—such as the Temple of the Vampire, certain Draconian orders, and specialized Qliphothic magic—metaphysical feeding is centralized and viewed as very positive.  Energy Exchange with the Undead: Followers believe in advanced spiritual entities (referred to as the "Ancient Ones" or "Undead Gods") who require life force or Prana/Qito retain consciousness across realms.

The "Good" Framing: Practitioners willingly offer their emotional or astral energy to these deities during rituals. In return, the deity filters, strengthens, and alters the patterns of the practitioner’s remaining energy. This symbiosis is viewed as a way to earn spiritual favors, develop psychic abilities, and eventually achieve "astral immortality".

3. Spiritual Symbiosis in Possession Cults

In many traditional esoteric and diaspora religions (such as Haitian Vodou, Brazilian Candomblé, and some forms of Spiritism), the boundary between "feeding" and "possession" is fluid.

Feeding via Trance: During a ritual trance, a deity (Lwa,Orisha, or spirit) takes full control of a human vessel's body and draws upon their physical and vital reserves to manifest in the physical world.

The "Good" Framing: The community and the host view this energy drain as an honor and a blessing. While the physical body may feel exhausted afterward, the act provides the host with divine protection, physical healing, and deep communal standing.

4. Transmutation and "Vampiric Healing"

In modern energetic occultism, some practitioners engage in intentional, consensual energy feeding for medicinal purposes.

Consuming Corrupted Energy: A psychic or spiritual practitioner will deliberately "feed" on another person's dense, toxic, or stagnant spiritual energy.

The "Good" Framing: This is framed as a literal psychic cleanup. By vacuuming out the energetic clutter or emotional trauma plaguing a subject, the "predator" gets a meal of raw essence to transmute, while the host gets instant emotional and spiritual relief.

5. Destructive Cult Dynamics (The Negative Contrast)

While the subcultures above look at the concept through a philosophical or magical lens, literal authoritarian cult leaders frequently use this concept manipulatively.

The Deceptive Framing: A charismatic cult leader may convince followers that a resident deity—or the leader themselves, acting as a living god—needs to drain their followers' personal autonomy, energy, and earthly assets to sustain a cosmic mission. Followers are taught to view their systemic burnout and total spiritual exhaustion not as abuse, but as a "holy sacrifice" or "karmic burning" necessary for salvation.

Some believe that gods, goddesses, angels etc depend on our prayers, energy and spiritual essence. They say imagining or manifesting them makes them real. We give them real life and must keep nurturing them. They help us or harm our enemies in return.

THE PARANORMAL

Why are there so many accounts in paranormal and religious tradition about ghosts and demons trying to induce a person to die by suicide or an accident? That only makes sense if the person really does die – does not live on - and an energy is left behind that an entity can use and absorb. A Darwinist style supernatural or paranormal realm might mirror this one. Here stronger beings consume unlucky or weaker ones and destroy them. Or do you want to posit a law where if a being succeeds in crushing you, that it then for some reason, is able to overpower and enslave you perhaps forever?
,
A variation of that view is that evil, though perhaps it is only abstract or in spite of that, acts remarkably like an agent in its own right. If evil gets you to die by suicide then evil gains something from that. It is something akin to being fed.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Religion must admit that it only has beliefs not definite facts about what soul or spirit are.  It cannot even prove their existence. It cannot rule out a soul being a food source for some kind of spiritual being.  It already teaches that the divinity and soul of Jesus feeds one in communion.  This feeding is strange for Jesus is not literally absorbed as food so it is more akin to swallowing chewing gum than a succulent piece of bread. It seems to be a confused affirmation that souls can feed souls.

Christianity's Satan is obsessed with owning souls even if they resist.  Nobody thinks that those who dwell in Hell want him owning them.  And it is said that even souls that rebel against God are still owned by God - but lost.  So if Satan cannot really own and if the souls are in Hell what use are they?   Is he generating power out of them or feeding on them?  Or does he merely think he does?  A being can feel stronger and more determined by imagining that its slaves give him some kind of mystic energy.

If he is feeding then why?  Is it to get stronger?  Will he die eventually without being fed? Or does he just feed anyway, just because he can, like a glutton for it degrades and harms his victim?

How does he feed?  Does he live inside to eat one from the inside?  Does he just grab one like an apple out of an orchard?  Does it depend?  Is it a bit of both?

If he is the consumer, the other demons in Hell must be as bad.  They must be feeding too.
