There is a book by
Michael Scheeringa titled "The Body Does Not Keep the Score: How Popular
Beliefs About Trauma Are Wrong."
It critiques the mainstream idea that
trauma manifests as stored physical memories in the body.
Nobody can
prove the idea wrong - only that it may be exaggerated. It is hard to verify
if a person who has cancer now got it from some resentment they had decades
before or from some harm done to them by another.
But what if it is not
so much about body memories or soul memories?
the soul exists and keeps memories impacting me? What if soul memory is real?
The Soul
If you view existence through a spiritual lens, the
concept of "soul memories"—experiences or trauma carried across this life or
even many lifetimes or spiritual realms—is fundamentally a mystery.
The
Mystery of Soul Memories
From a spiritual perspective, the soul is an
immaterial essence. How an immaterial entity encodes, stores, and recalls
specific historical events remains an paradox to the intellect. The soul is a
mystery both to human understanding and to its own conscious experience.
Lack of Reliable Treatment
Because soul memories exist outside the
boundaries of any attempt at science, there is no scientifically reliable or
standardized treatment for distress attributed to them. Practices like
past-life regression or spiritual clearing lack clinical validation and
standardized safety protocols.
Risks and Authoritative Warnings
Mainstream psychological and medical authorities warn against treating
unverified, non-somatic "memories."
The American Psychological
Association (APA) cautions against memory recovery techniques that lack
empirical evidence.
They note that pursuing unverified historical
trauma can create false memories, increase psychological distress, and
destabilize a patient's current mental health.
The Problem of
"Accidental" Good Deeds
If a person performs a good deed in this life
significantly driven by an unconscious, unverified memory from a past
existence, it complicates the nature of morality.
The action is a
reaction to a past script, rather than a conscious, free-willed choice in the
present. It is not as much about virtue as it seems. The "goodness" of the
deed is problematic as it stems from an unresolved spiritual echo rather than
genuine, present-day compassion or love.
But...
Arguably
suggesting there is a soul must plant concern about soul memories in us
somehow. Some faiths argue that they know they are real. That reinforces.
Anecdotal evidence heavily reinforces the fear too. Human nature likes to
blame something in its makeup when accused of being responsible for a harm.
